STEP Education in Guernsey
About the STEP Certificate in Guernsey
The STEP Certificate is the entry level qualification available for anyone over the age of 16 years old to study in Guernsey. This is a crunch course exam which gives students a good introduction to the Fiduciary world and serves as a good platform from which to move onto the Diploma Course.
The Certificate also gives credits to Students which count towards their full STEP Memberships which other introductory finance courses and qualifications do not.
About the STEP Diploma in Guernsey
The STEP Diploma is the next level up from the Certificate and individuals are required to have gained 60 credits in order to qualify to undertake this next phase. Click here to learn more about entry requirements.
The Diploma is in four parts:
Trust Creation Law & Practice
Company Law & Practice
Trust Administration & Accounts
Trustee Investment & Financial Appraisal
The 4 courses are spread over 2 years – 2 1/2 with the Certificate and you can order the way in which you take the papers. Click here to see the course timetable which is published by Central Law Training.
Continuous Professional Development (“CPD”)
As well as assisting towards your career development as a STEP member you are required to undertake Continuous Professional Development (CPD) as part of your STEP Membership.
The STEP Guernsey Lectures are geared towards assisting STEP Members not only to keep up to date with topical issues and current best practice all but also to contribute to annual CPD requirements. As such all STEP Lectures are CPD accredited and you should maintain a record of your attendance at STEP Events to evidence your annual CPD.
Your Human Resources department will undoubtedly keep a record of your attendance, but one of the perks of your STEP membership is that you are provided with support to help you maintain a record. Click here to log in and record your CPD directly.
For me, the STEP Diploma in International Trust Management is the true benchmark for any fiduciary practitioner in Guernsey to undertake. It offers students the chance to enhance already established skills and explore areas of the fiduciary world which may not arise from day to day work. It is taught by professionals, for professionals and through both distance learning and classroom discussions the students have the chance to heighten their understanding of the fiduciary world to enable them to progress and further themselves in the future.
About our Student Liaison Officer
Once you begin your studies your status will be officially recognised as a Student. Matt Gilligan from Louvre Trust is STEP Guernsey Student Liaison Officer and he provides us below with an insight into the Studying in Guernsey and his role.
Matt Gilligan is our Student Liaison Officer who is responsible for the welfare of STEP Students in Guernsey: “I have been on the Guernsey committee as the student liaison officer for over 5 years having initially joined whilst still actively completing the Diploma. During my time I have sat both the Diploma and the various Advanced Certificates which STEP offer. I feel that it is important to continue my personal development not just to enhance my skills in specific areas but to be able to relate and offer an insight to the students who are taking (or contemplating) the exams which STEP offer. I am always happy to offer advice to students and can give first hand experience as to what the exams entail.”
